Welcome to my Woodstock costume website for some really cool and groovy hippie costumes that will take you back in time. Looking like you’ve stepped right out of the Woodstock Music Festival, hippie costumes are a brilliant choice for any Halloween or fancy dress party.
Whether you want some flower power or fringe benefits there are plenty of Woodstock costumes for you. Just take a look at some of the colorful costumes below to get you started. Click on any link and you will be transported back to the halcyon days of peace and music.
Faux Suede Hippie Vest CostumeFringed suede or leather vests, tie-dye tee shirts, headbands and long flowing hair was a staple hippie costume for both men and women in the 1960’s. Wear with your grungiest jeans or a long flowing skirt and you have the hippie Woodstock look just right. The vest shown here is made of faux suede with fringing and a tie front, just waiting to add your own jeans, shirt, jewelry and wig to make it complete. Available in women’s style also.
Flower Power Hippie Adult CostumeThe term Flower Power was used as a symbol of non-violence and passive resistance during the late 60’s and early 70’s, rooted in people’s opposition to the Vietnam War. Hippies used the symbol of the flower in their clothing, wearing clothing with embroidered flowers and made of vibrant colors and designs. They also wore flowers in their hair. This pink flowing psychedelic looking costume is a perfect flower power costume with its flower and peace signs.
Far Out Man Adult CostumeThe hippie movement of the late 1960’s became known not only for its unique style of dressing, psychedelic rock music or even sexual openness, but also for the use of mind altering drugs. It seems that the term “far out” quite literally meant being in an alternative state of consciousness, a state of amazement or delight. I don’t advocate taking drugs but you can be far out in this extremely “far out” hippie costume with its psychedelic print shirt, matching headband and bell-bottom pants.
Woodstock Girl Adult CostumeTo match the far out dude costume, there’s this far out woodstock girl costume that will transport you to another place. It’s really pretty with its white peasant top, tie dyed skirt with flower power patterns and a matching headband. Add some cool jewels and you will really flower this Halloween!
John Q. Woodstock Adult CostumeThis is one cool and crazy Woodstock Halloween costume with its awesome striped pants and shirt with attached vest. Add your own wig, headband, sun glasses and tambourine to look like you’re grooving with the music. This is such a perfect Woodstock Festival recreation costume, that you can’t help but have fun wearing it.
Hippie Love Child Adult CostumeI love this hippie love child costume with its long flowing psychedelic dress and long fringed vest with peace symbol accents and matching headband. To me this costume is everything you’ve ever thought the 1960’s and hippie culture epitomises such as peace, flower power and fun. Those around during the Woodstock days are now talked about as the Woodstock generation and this type of clothing was typical of that time.
The Woodstock Music Festival is probably still regarded as one of the greatest music festivals of all time, even over 40 years after the event. It was held from August 15 to 18 in Bethel, just south west of Woodstock, New York. During this great weekend of music, 32 acts performed in front of a huge audience of around 500,000. Amongst those acts that performed were Ravi Shankar, Joan Baez, Santana, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Jimi Hendrix. It really was the festival to symbolise non-violence and peace with Swami Satchidananda , an Indian spiritual teacher, giving the opening invocation.
From the festival came two soundtracks, the first being Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More and a year later, Woodstock 2. Then in the 1990’s another album was released called Woodstock Diary with previously unreleased performances. To mark the 40th anniversary of this great festival, a 6-CD box set was released called Woodstock: 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur’s Farm.
In 1970 a documentary style movie was released called Woodstock directed by Michael Wadleigh. In 2009 another Woodstock movie was released called Taking Woodstock produced by Ang Lee.
Most of us associate Woodstock with the music festival, but did you know that Charles Schulz who created the comic strip, Peanuts, named his yellow bird character Woodstock as a tribute to the concert. If you’re after a Peanuts Woodstock costume rather than a hippie Woodstock costume take a look at my Peanuts Costumes website.
